You want to live forever apes? (Starship Troopers PC)
Starship troopers for the PC, the empire software one, not the oldie, is based on the movies by the same name. That really says enough for those of us that have seen those, and it will most likely make fans of STC (Starship Troopers: Chronicles) or the book be very disappointed.
The game has you play as an unknown commando type trooper. These have better Armour and weapons than the regular troopers. These marauders also serve as heroic examples to inspire the troops and that sort of thing. (Funny detail is that in STC there are big walking tanks with the same name.) These folks are sent into the hottest hot spots, made to lead advances etc etc.
Story wise this game goes absolutely nowhere, you get to see small snippets of the movies from time to time and you play alongside events from same. At first there is a small hit that you might get some character development, but that's a no no.
Most of the missions involve shooting your way trough almost endless waves of 'bugs' in various shapes and sizes. Again here they missed a good chance because almost all of the species used in the game are from the movies only.
Your weapons are ok but personally I feel that the explosives are seriously underpowered. Most of the time blasting away with your rifle in short bursts does far more damage than a well placed grenade. Those have a painfully small blast radius to boot.
Starship Troopers, especially the first movie in my book is one that only lives on it's SFX. That and the worst case of bad overacting I've sen since really old soap series. It was an insult to the book which apart from some rather old fashioned views was a good enough story.
The animated STC series was by far more to my liking, it is a well worked out story with good strong character development en on a whole pretty good voice acting. Why they decided to use the poor movies rather than the other sources for this game frankly is beyond me.
Graphically it is an okay game, the sound is also decent and gameplay wise it's in no way bad. It's mainly the lack of a story and no real motivation to beat the game that does it in. If you enjoy blasting away baddies with all sorts of weapons and in various ways, give this a go. If like me you need a reason to kill things, don't bother with it.
