lets play PREY

THE GOOD:

A relatively easy playing FPS game with nice graphics and half decent OpenAI implementation making for ok sound. It is long enough to keep you playing for a while and there is enough variation in the levels and monsters to keep it interesting.

THE BAD:

Profanity galore. The main character is a rude whiny foul mouthed git you would not mind dying on you. The game has gore for the sake of having gore.

THE DOWNRIGHT STUPID:

The level design is weird. there is no logic to the things that are done. The devs make a lot of use of warp portals. Now nothing wrong there as such, but here the placement of said portals and their destinations are plain silly.
You also get to play around with gravity a lot. This on its own isn't a bad thing either. BUT for some obscure reason these changes never affect your enemies. You flip over an entire room's center of gravity and everything will fall down EXCEPT the monsters.
I'm sure some geeky techie mumbo jumbo reason can be cooked up. Like them having boots with magnets or personal gravity fields. HOWEVER the game also has special walkways with their own gravity field. IF the monsters could defy gravity at will there would be no need for those since it's THEIR ship.

The levels are also extremely linear and apart from scripted events there is on real interaction with the world. You can blast away a giant super robot style baddy with huge guns mounted on its arms no problem, however faced with a few stacked crates or a fallen support you have no choice but to mak4e a major detour. Even the smallest glass like crates are unbreakable by your strongest weapon. This posses an interesting point of logic: seeing as these aliens have plenty of lightweight easy to make near indestructible materials why aren't the turrets made out of it or covered with a shielding layer of said material? Why aren't the guards wearing armor of the exact same stuff? And since 90% of everything you fight are bio mechanical why aren't these semi robots made out of said materials either? It's kinda stupid isn't it? They make unbreakable wires, cables, doors, walls, windows, crates, lamps, consoles and what have you. But their most powerful war machines, fighters and soldiers are unprotected and can be destroyed/killed with a common wrench.. erm.. ohkaaaay.

The spirit guide is a nice idea. Except that this one doesn't do much in the way of actual guiding. It doesn't show you the way, circle over vital parts of the area or buzz in front of you keeping you from walking into a trap. It does sit on interesting consoles. Problem is, it sits on just about EVERYTHING. For a spirit this is one lazy falcon. he keeps needing a rest. x_C
